First Time Application to UK Passport
The standard 10 year British passport is only available to adults over 16 years of age who are in the UK at the time of application and who have one of the following citizenships:
- A British citizen.
- A British Dependent Territories citizen.
- A British Overseas citizen.
- A British Subject.
Documents Required
You must be able to prove that you are of British Nationality. To do this you must include the original of the relevant document/s as listed below. Copies or photocopies of any kind will not be accepted.
- If you were born in the United Kingdom
- Birth certificates are not absolute proof of identity. We may ask for other documents (for example, driving licence, medical card, National Insurance card or benefit book) to confirm eligibility.
- Born or adopted in the UK before 1 January 1983
- Your birth or adoption certificate.
- Born or adopted in the UK after 31 December 1982
- Your full birth or adoption certificate showing your parents' details (if the parents are also born after 31 December 1982 we may ask for further documents to establish nationality); and
- If neither parent was a British citizen at the time of your birth, your parents' passports (or a letter from the Immigration Department) showing that there was no restriction on their stay in the UK at the time of your birth. If only your father was resident in the UK, you will also need to provide your parents' marriage certificate.
- Born outside the UK before 1 January 1983
- Your British consular or high commission birth certificate showing your parents' details, and the passport on which you entered the UK; or
- Your full birth certificate showing your parents' details, your parents' marriage certificate, your father's birth certificate (or certificate of registration or naturalisation), and the passport on which you entered the UK.
Note: You cannot claim British nationality through your mother.
- Born outside the UK after 31 December 1982
- Your full British consular or high commission birth certificate showing your parents' details, and the passport on which you entered the UK; or
- Your full birth certificate showing your parents' details, the passport you entered the UK on and evidence that one of your parents was British at the time of your birth. That is:
- your mother's UK birth certificate or certificate of registration or naturalisation; or
- your father's UK birth certificate or certificate of registration or naturalisation, and your parents' marriage certificate.
- British national after being granted a certificate of registration or naturalisation by the Home Office
- Your certificate of registration or naturalisation and the passport on which you entered the UK
- British overseas territories citizen
- Your birth certificate and your current passport.
This list is not exhaustive. More complex claims to British citizenship require sight of other documents.
- Changes of name
If your name is different from that shown on your birth certificate or nationality document you will need to send us evidence of all the names you have been known by.
- To change your name from that on your birth, adoption, naturalisation or registration certificate
Your marriage certificate;
If you are about to marry, a post-date (PD2) form;
Your change of name deed; or
Your divorce document.
- To go back to your maiden name
A statement confirming that you will be using your maiden name for all purposes.
- To change a child's name
