Lost or Stolen Passport in Australia

You can report your Australian passport lost, stolen or damaged from this website. This should be done as soon as you can. To use this service, you must know your passport number. We will ask you a number of questions to confirm your identity, and then ask about the circumstances of the loss. If you wish to replace your passport, you can complete the appropriate passport application form online. If you do not wish to replace your passport you can complete a Lost or Stolen Australian Passport form online.

In Australia

If you are in Australia you can immediately report your passport lost, stolen or found. You can also telephone the Australian Passport Information Service on 131 232 and report the loss.

When applying for a replacement passport, you will need to:

  • complete a new passport application form,
  • provide details of the lost passport,
  • attend an interview,
  • pay the current passport fee.

Overseas

If you are outside Australia and your passport is lost or stolen you must immediately report your passport lost, stolen or damaged on the Internet, or report the loss to the nearest Australian diplomatic or consular mission.

If you are replacing your passport, you will need to:

  • complete an overseas passport application form,
  • provide details of the lost passport,
  • attend an interview,
  • pay the current passport fee.

If not replacing your passport you should complete a Lost or Stolen Australian passport form and send it to the nearest Australian diplomatic or consular mission.

Report your passport lost in the mail

You can report your passport lost in the mail if:

  • Your passport was despatched more than 5 working days ago
  • Your passport was mailed to an Australian address

It may take between 1 and 4 days for a passport to be mailed to you. Please check with your post office before contacting us.

If you need to travel urgently please telephone the Australian Passport Information Service on 131 232 (from anywhere in Australia).

If the mailing address for your passport is outside Australia, please contact the nearest Australian diplomatic or consular mission.
